Bison in the Golden Grass
About
About this collection
A short set from time spent in big open country, plus a portrait of one very patient dog. Wildlife is where the long lens earns its keep, and where I've learned to keep my distance and let the animals do their thing.

Notes on the photographs
- 01Bison in the Golden Grass
This bison wandered along the edge of the trees through tall grass, completely unbothered by anyone watching. I kept my distance and let the 200mm end of the lens do the work.
- 02Moose Looking Back Across the Creek Bed
A young bull moose picked its way across a dried-up creek bed and paused to look right at me. Shot from a long way off at 200mm on the a6500.
- 03Moose Crossing the Dry Creek Bed
Same young bull a frame earlier, striding across the rocks and driftwood in profile before it noticed me. A long lens and a lot of patience.
- 04River Bends Through the Valley Grass
A slow river winding through wide open grassland. I shot this from the top of the bank for a higher angle, wide at 18mm, with the roadside pullout just visible in the distance.
- 05Oxbow Loop in the Grassland
From the same bank, the river doubles back on itself in an almost complete loop. Wide at 18mm and stopped down to f/14 to keep it sharp front to back.
- 06Old Dog in Window Light
A quiet portrait of a little dog watching something out of frame. Shot at 50mm wide open at f/1.8 for that soft, blurred background.
